6 Golden Rule To Lending Friends and Family

This issue was decades old now and I think will go on from years to come. Have you even heard of this from the conversation of your parents and relatives? Things like money matters from debt, sometimes it's bugging in the ears. The issue is they can't get over with it year after year.

So here's some tips or you may call it rules to lending your friends and family without having conflict on the end.

1. Lend if you feel you don't need the money. Well, we all need money right? But there are times we think we had spare to share. Don't lend specially if you really need it next week or next month. Don't settle with their promises because sometimes it screwed up in the end, making you disappointed.

2. Lend if it feels comfortable for you. I know we had this generosity nature but sometimes we're not at ease about it. So if you can't sleep at night don't do it.

3. Lend to person you trust. By lending with trust, you eliminate the subject of worry. That will make you sleep worry free. If you can't say no. You can just lend 50% of what he ask and to lessen the risk. I heard story like this and the borrower said you have 50% debt from me by just lending me 50%. Just ridiculous right?

4. Lend and be sure not to hurt your feeling if it wasn't paid back specially if it's your family. That's why in rule #1, I told that lend if you don't really need the money.

5. Lend to help genuinely but not to tolerate their poor money handling issues. Because you're not helping them at all. You can instead advice them money management tips to take care their finances.

6. And lastly don't curse your friend or family if it wasn't paid back. At the end of the day it is still just money, you can just find a way to earn it back. You can't just say "Abuloy ko na lang (funeral donation)" It's not good thing to say honestly.

This issue recur from time to time. It happens everywhere and anytime. To avoid big issues about it try to consider the list above so you can live happily ever after. If you have your own list feel free to add it below in the comment box.

Psychology Of Retirement

Yesterday we attended a seminar. This particular seminar are for government employees who were retiring soon from decades of employment and among those participants are my mom.

The night before we attend that seminar conducted by a government agency, we had a talk with my parents. What could be the topic for tomorrow's seminar? I thought it was a wealth management or financial planning seminar for retirees and it would be great if I can learn a lot while still young.

Why You Need Emergency Funds

Four years ago after getting out of college I had my first job in a billion dollar company "SM". I found myself working there as a customer service in an appliance center.

This article is not about the job but what I did about the earnings working in several companies and how you can learn from that mistake of mine. This is just about a simple money management.

Simple Ways To Save

I read countless of blogs, articles and financial related topics about proper savings. Each has different formula. This articles is not different from others but I'm just going to point out some not so hard way to save.

Before going to some list of concerns about saving. There are some psychological mindset to wire first. Why other people are frugal and some are not when both are in the same financial status? Let say they are both rich or poor but they have different money mindset.

That I believe is based on their psychological thinking about money. Values and principles may also add a big factor about it.

If You Want Something Ready To Give It First Before Asking

I was reading a book about finance when I read the statement "When you want something, first ready to give it". It take a couple of minutes for me to sink in that statement on my mind. I'm thinking what wisdom I can draw with the phrase.

If you want love, ready to give love first. If you want more financial wealth ready to share it first to receive it. It's like the verse from the Bible that says "Do unto others what you want them do unto you".

You Are Too Talented Enough To Create Something

Whether we like it or not finance is essential to ones living. Money was not the most important thing in this world but the lack of it will really affect how the way we and our family live.

We always hear story of our friends getting on debt, buying thing that they don't really need and getting screwed up on their finance eventually because emergency happens.

I don't know what your financial status is right now but one thing is for sure that many of us Filipinos lack something and we have to fill those gap or else our family gonna starve and lights, water will go off in our house.

Sad to say due to this financial crisis that many of us need to go outside the country to search for good opportunity that will give higher reward.

I remember when I was a child, One day my mom told me she has a convention in China for one week. I told my mom I don't want her to go there. I am making such story that the plane will crash so that she won't go.

At that time I was at my elementary days. I don't really like to feel being left. Considering it's just a week off home, I can't stand it. What more if she needs to work abroad. Thankful that my mom came home safe and sound and planning to retired this 2014 in the government.

But anyway just imagine working abroad very hard to save and sent money to family back home and then all of a sudden your kids, and family got in mess. I'm not telling it's bad to work abroad it's just that before you tend to do so. Have a heart to heart talk with your family and make it clear that you have a purpose going abroad.

Family are precious, they are our treasure.

If I can picture you the whole scenario sometimes it goes like this.

Breadwinner or family members goes abroad work for a specific period of time. Let say 5-10 years. If you really have a big time job abroad and have a financial managing skills odds are you will do very well.

On the other side if we have family members working abroad and they just keeps working and sending you money that you keep spending on liabilities at home, chance are they go old broke. We don't want that to happen when they go home. We want them to see what are the fruits of their labor. There are so many ways we can do with the money they send.

If you go work abroad better have a plan. Usually they want to earn big so they could provide more. But when they provide more and more, sometimes people back home tend to become lazy and then they waste the things you earn. Have a written plan on this regard. And If you're planning to do business after the workings days of your life. Better yet to have those important skills, knowledge and creativity etc. Better yet start learning and doing while working on your day job. Here's some key:

1. LEARN TO SELL - Learn the skills of an entrepreneur so in time you can put up your business after paying those bills. I don't yet known a business people who doesn't know how to sell. I know people don't like to sell stuff but the reality is:

 - Many employees don't like selling. But when you apply in a job. Do you think you aren't selling? who do you sell? Well yes. You sell yourself you sales talk the good character, skills that you have. So if you can learn those thing why not selling small things.

If you ask me what to sell. I offering almost everything to insurance, product, business opportunity and other thing that people need -even my own money I sold it too. Anything, just sell. The learning you acquire is enough to make you beyond your capabilities.

2. STUDY - Knowing how money works through reading books are essential so you can manage income of the family. Studying don't stop at school but the real lesson is thought in real life. Many of us are afraid to go their own way because they afraid to make mistakes.

In school every mistake is feeling of discouragement and stress. But in real life mistake will make us tough and build our character. Invest in yourself to be educated. By attending seminar, reading books, and learn from other successful people.

If you're comfortable on your desk, chances are you'll be sitting for the next 20 years on you chair.

It's very overwhelming at first but if you have strong desire you can do everything.

On my last note. Filipinos are flexible and talented with good character. That is why we Filipinos are the most exported assets by our country.

Importance Of Tracking Your Expenses

Why is it important to track your expenses?

Common problems are how to get your cash meet on the next following payroll. Laging na lang bang bitin?

Basically if you don't do it some unnecessary expenses my accumulate getting you in trouble while waiting for the next payday. This is one reason; another is and I think the most important is setting aside something in your bank account, and investment vehicle to grow your earning that you can use for future needs.

If you're an employee like me. It's too difficult to live when your pocket money for next payroll period is short; your now tightening your budget, make a little spending for self and for worst borrowing from other co-employees or friends just to meet another payday. I've been a victim of the common habits of a typical employee who spend unconsciously on things that you don't really need.

I'm still experiencing those from time to time during emergency time. Yet I still have few friend who borrow just pay for their wants. Well think twice again if you wanted to get out in your situation.

Honestly it's very tempting once  na sayo na buong sweldo mo, marami kang maiisip bilhin, sasabayan pa ng mga kaibigan mahilig sa gimik or manganganchaw pa sayo. It's your personal decision when it comes to your money. But remember when the winter comes be sure na para kang langam na nakapagimpok ng pagkain nung tag-init. Be like an ant who works summer and has no problems about food during winter season. Life works the same. Preparation is one good strategy.

PRIORITY

Many of my colleague and friends mentioning that I am "Kuripot" just because I don't pay for cell phone load too often or buying new things like gadget etc. no way! I had a monthly internet bill.

It's just a matter of prioritizing what matters. The last time I bought an expensive thing is a Tablet. I bought it for some business and communication purposes. I won't bother buying it if I don't have good purposes.

Buying car and motor bike needs proper planning.

For example: You get a worth 50K Motor cycle with a down payment of 3K will give you a monthly negative Cashflow of 3.9K for 1 year until it's totally paid. I know everyone wants to have their own car or house it's just prioritizing WHEN is the RIGHT TIME to have one. If you're using a vehicle to cut transpo expenses better have one. But consider that there are monthly maintenance and cost on maintaining it. Better get advice on reputable car/ motor sales representative on it's specs to cut additional expenses and save from it.

CASHFLOW IDEA

What does awareness of Cashflow will give you?

If you're aware of your own Cashflow you have a better idea on your monthly expenses and it will give you an idea how much really you can set aside for future use and emergency needs.

Let me site you a Cashflow of an average employee who has minimal responsibility:

In this figure the average monthly Cashflow of  the employee is PHP 4,500. If he earns around PHP 15K monthly and has an expenses of PHP 10.5K monthly.  Just to give an illustration of what cashflow is all about.

Being a single has no big responsibility unless you're a bread winner that almost of your family member rely on you! You need to budget everything for them to survive and eventually stand on their own especially to brother or sister who still needs to study. Parents who still rely on their child for them to survive.

WHAT TO DO WITH SPARE CASH?

So what can you do if you have Cashflow of PHP 4,500 monthly

Ask me. Better start study on financial matters. Investment and businesses any place where your hard earn money could grows and multiply. Dont be afraid to commit mistake because that where you learn. Before you do it read and learn first because it is your hard earned money. I'll be tackling those on other article.

Buy assets. Things that makes cash flows to you like, investing on stocks, apartment, business. Just learn what will fits for you.

BUDGETING YOUR NEEDS

So what if I am married w/ child? It's a different story

Here are some list to consider on:

1. Monthly payables - Utility bills like Meralco, Internet if you have one, and Water bills is the most common) you don't wanna have home that is so dim at night and no appliances running when you need it most or water to take a bath daily. Rental payments if you don't have a own house and etc.

2. Food and Transportation - Now if you're employed you won't earn if you don't set aside budget for your food and transpo whether you have ride or just a commuter. And family food budget. You don't wanna starve your family don't you and considering also there daily "baon" in school or work.

3. Allowance for kids - In this one you should be reasonable in giving a right allowance for your kid. Not too much not too less. You don't wanna raise a kid that in time to expensive. Considering there are lots of vices around like computer and so on.

4. Mortgage - If you're paying your own house

5. Insurance - If you know it's importance to your love one.

6. HMO or Health card  - Regarding health issues. Usually corporate people has this benefits. An additional protection for your family when got sick aside from coverage and discount from Phil Health.

These are the basic things you need to set a budget for. There are lots of expenses you'll be listed there but it depends on your lifestyle.

SUMMARY

In summary of our topic Here are the bottom line why is it important to track your expenses.

1. To build a good Portfolio Investment - You ask me why? The main reason is you won't work forever  to earn money. And not all of your whole life is that you're in good health and time will come you lose some of those strength in order to work. So the earlier you come up with a good habit of saving and investing while maintaining your expenses low you have a good chance of retiring early.

2. You'll save a lot when you tract and wise on your spending. Many high income earner today save less because number one is that they have all the money they have to spend and enjoy right away. Immediate need may not arise early but soon they will come. And the time they arise you're not prepared or you did not settle a budget for it. We don't wanna experience going to relatives and friends to borrow money don't you or selling lot title, car or gadget that you bought on those days your pretty blessed financially.

These are just the common problem of Filipinos when it comes to spending habits. There are so many financial problems nowadays because of miss managing those financial decision in life. Getting to bad debt due to impulsive decision caused by emotion and feeling are things you might want to address.

One key solution is to become financially educated on investing and money managing. Better start buying books and read articles that is very informative and helpful to your life. Cut reading non sense negatives news and rumors but focus on being literate. Be careful on where you get advices from specially for people who themselves has no control of their own finances or investment. If you really want to retire early and start doing your own things try thinking about it again. I know you have dream also.

Importance Of Saving Today and Investing

Why do saving and investing is important?

Before we answer the question why do saving and investing is important. let me ask you a question why do you want to save first?

If you take a moment to answer that question you may be thinking of the future. It maybe for yourself or family and kids future. Things like owning a house, car, education of your kids and a future businesses that you thought off. It's great because somehow you thought of something in the future and to tell you, the people I knew often comes with a certain age before actually thinking of saving. Usually they are people at 30's to 40's.

Because at early 20's and teenage years they focus on themselves and their wants in life. And when they reach a certain point in life specially when they are engaging to marriage that's the time they only began thinking for their own family.

Now if you fall in younger stage in life to think about these thing is great for you because you have longer period of time planning for it. Now if you are in your late 30's above, it's not too late because as long as you can do things and with a proper mindset you can always start today and move forward.

Basically it's pretty simple by knowing how to properly save your income you have the chance to invest in or to grow what you save. Saving is the basic step on the process of growing the money. As long as you don't have the discipline to put aside some fair amount of money you can't do too much on your investment.

Now if you're already a saver in the bank, which is good but not fair enough because it only yield 1-3% interest annually plus tax. It's a good because you can always an emergency fund to count on. But be aware that it is easily to withdraw and temp to spend it. So it's better you find it a good investment vehicle to grow in time.

Now what comes to your mind when you say "Investment"?

Actually these are some meaning has to do with investment.:

1. Investing is putting time to learn, to spend on family to have a better relationship, to attend seminar and other productive things.
2. Investing is giving some amount of cash to buy books that can help you sharp those skills and learning additional information.
3. Investing could be effort that you do that don't require large amount of money. Like doing your job great or managing your business effectively.
4. Investing could also buying things that appreciate in the future or gives you return. Like putting your money on stocks, bonds, real estate, business and other things.

Money Perspective

As you began to think of the Big Picture it doesn't necessary all about money. It also involves mostly of time and hard work.

Now to begin with, saving could be hard unless your current lifestyle don't fit. For example:

Even a 6 figure earner with 6 figure expenses is still no difference with an average earner who spend all the things he earn leaving no saving at all.

There are saver that they are just saving to buy expensive things. There is no wrong with that but it could be useless if you can't use that in the future. There are things that could also add up to your expenses like buying stuff that that do require monthly maintenance to sustain.

There are also people who intend to buy what wealthy people could afford to buy. Not even thinking if they really need it right now.

Savings could be the very first thing you need to do to move your financial status. Not addressing the issue could cost so many years of wasting money that could already works for you.

Living beyond your means could be very expensive and living below your mean could be very hard. The two has always has impact on your life and your family.

Here are some difference of the two:

1. Living beyond your mean could cost very high saving less for the future. That could also mean pawning or selling any stuff that has value. That is why every expert advice buy the things that is worthy today and for your future.

2. Living below your mean on the other side is completely different on the luxurious living. Settling for less and delaying gratification to enjoy in the future. Robert Kiyosaki a Financial guru the author of "Rich Dad and Poor Dad" mentioned on his book that living below your means kills the spirit but expanding your means are the appropriate. Which is simply telling expanding yourself first in order to live not less but according to your mean upward.

I know God wants us all to prosper but unfortunately the reality is not every individual has the access to all the information and will power to move from point A to B.

Photo taken after attending a financial seminar at IMG Head Office in Makati City

A lot of group and experts are conducting seminar and doing their advocacy to the financial education of Filipinos, doing their job to increase the financial IQ of people when it comes to finance. I am really grateful for those individual who share their expertise on the field and that is something noble thing to do and very fulfilling to accomplish.

By giving value to the idea of saving and investing. You'll help a lot of people around you not only your family and self.

Life Of A Call Center Agent

Before I got to BPO industry I was employed back then from a minimum salaried job from the position of HR staff, Coordinator, Customer Service Representative etc. I will not mention my salary on this particular company but it's not that high compared to Call Center Company located at Ortigas or Makati. But it surely a much more salary than my previous job. And I think if you are single, this definitely a pretty lump of hard earn money.

My account was a non voice which you are just require to transcribe voice message of foreign country into text nothing more nothing less and you also need to be accurate on the quality to get high score in everyday evaluation. As you imagine the life in a BPO industry it's actually the same everyday, same faces, same friends and an alternating supervisor, sometimes faces that now you see now you don't. People who quit after a few months, weeks and so forth. If you summarize the big picture it's just everyday the same but UNLESS! you do something different.

Doing the opposite of most agents are doing

What are the common thing agents do. Well in health matters that is smoking and drinking. I just found somewhat non sense really. I tried it several time but I don't hook up on it. Even drinking every payday period. I'm just thinking they maybe enjoying it right now but not in the future as it cost now a days to drink even just a single bottle would cost around 70 to 100 peso. It's like the same amount of your fare or gas getting to the company. Finance wise it's really an expense. But do sometime it's tough to pass on specially you want to make an impression of you are having good relationship with them Filipinos called "Pakikisama". There's nothing wrong with that as long as you are in the position to do so.

While they are spending their hard earn money on new phones, shirt and other depreciating thing. I invest on stocks, buying new books, investing in my business tools and presentation medium like tablet etc
I also watch and read good topics about finance and personal development. It really requires an intentional action. Having that habit are not easy to do. Specially if you don't appreciate the worth of Financial Freedom and being free from ignorance. Bible has a lot to do with it.

Am I in the same page with you? Are you following me? okay by getting out of the crowd I made a difference of what they do. I just did the opposite.

Making a difference to someones life

In every company I've been I make it to the point that I contribute to the growth of those people who surrounds me.

Referring to the book Law of Attraction or The Secret. Which basically tells that what dominates on your mind will attract. Well it works. Because I have an idea of awareness when it comes to financial and personal development. I attract those people who seek those category. I basically repel those employees who just love to enjoy what they earn buy that buy those. It really works promise!

So getting back to the changes I did. What I did was digging up to my sources of wisdom, books and materials etc. I was like a book worm who just lend book to those people who is interested on that areas.
I was having fun with them because they really want to learn considering these people are years in that company like I am before who can't control their own finances.

Every time I met with those people with a common culture we discuss on finance, stocks, real estate and insurance etc. These people are about 20+ yrs of age others are 30+ but most common they are at their 20's like I am. It was wonderful. I taught them to invest on stocks but do home research first. But before you can actually do investing they should handle their finances better. Mean it simply creating a new set of mindset for investing. They begin to become frugal and do their own budgeting to set aside for their investment. So that's where it start and it doesn't end there, I feel that they still want to learn more.

Wisdom leaks and it searches for an opening

Every made discoveries leads to another. It's like this discovering some fact that leads to another. We'll that is true. Almost all of these people are somewhat inter related about the books they read.and eventually bounded on a common ground. I don't remember they formed a group with each other before. I met them one by one. And I'm trying to establish them right now to maximize learning it's better to collaborate with great people to benefit one individual from the whole.

We want these agent to still pursue their dreams even having limited pay

As you can imagine the company has different shift, people who began working late night or so early morning like 12am -5am between those shift people start working. Having no sleep is the only problem with us agents. I personally said to myself I don't want to spend longer. But as I asses my current status I still need to spend sometime there and keep learning and sharpen my skills.

Beginning to shift quadrants employee to self employed and soon a business owner.

A friend of mine introduce me on this particular insurance company it's very well know on UK and it's already listed in the stock exchange abroad. I study the company and give it a shot, since I have a background on selling and networking I easily adapted the system. I just taking sometime to master the legal documents and etc. I decided to become a financial consultant as my second career but I'm taking it seriously because these I think it's my key to getting out on the rat race, It's just a matter of mastering the industry and be good at it. You may found your self on different field on your forte but once you had a good feeling about it grab it tightly.

Not as many like me has the guts to make a shift. What they always tells me is that they are XX years on service and still no increase on salaries. Well I said my friend it's better to have some type of investment that your money works for you to feel those increase. It maybe a business or investment. Relying alone on basic salaries won't take you so far. I said my friend you need to learn the art of investing and have fun while on the process at the same time.

Learning and applying what you learn is two different matter. Many people who already knows but don't have the guts to actually start doing it. It maybe because of the risk and fear. These are just part of the learning method we acquired from the school. "Life teach you by how many mistakes you commit not how many correct answer you made" I'm going to end this blog by leaving a powerful statement.

Quitting is the easiest you can do so why quit now?

Let your self experience temporary defeat and failure, but never mind them the important thing is never forget what the goals are.

Journey to financial freedom

Journey to financial freedom

People nowadays constantly moving, it's just either you move up, move down or hold still making little progress. For people who has goals in life this will quite significant in life. Most have their personal goals in life waiting to be achieve. But the mere fact most us Filipinos has poor financial education, so that will make us tied to that big ball you see on the picture on left.

This blog drive me to those Filipino's seeking answer to financial freedom. to begin with I would like to introduce myself to give you thoughts on the author of this blog.

Yes it's me "Gen H. Punongbayan" basically currently employed on a manufacturing company of bottled plastic caps, I work as a HR Assistant at the same time a Coordinator both serving the agency and our client company. I also graduated college finishing the course of Ab Psychology. We'll my career began after graduating school back in 2010. Neither I do have good solid plan for what to do after graduation. But I'm am extremely aware that reality of life will begin after school. Basically I began looking for job opportunity.

Well It didn't take too long to seek an employer, well basically my first employer was SM owned by business tycoon Mr. Henry Sy. I work there as a customer service assistant in one appliance store which SM sister company. To summarized the story with my first employer, I took more time doing the training rather than working for a long time with my boss. In short I left early by not standing the attitude of my boss.  We honestly I was a rookie coming from a fresh grad. I learned my first lesson back then and started working a lot longer now. I took 2 more employer before arriving at my current job today as an HR assistant.

While on that 2 employer lots of things happened. I came up with several opportunities particularly on business. Well since I was too open on opportunity I quickly jump on it. Studying and planning how to work things out. This business a network marketing company. I know business man and entrepreneur are not new to these concepts. And so much people in different walks of life are hoping on it. Well just a piece of advice. I believe these are not for all. But I do believe you'll gain some skill important skills while doing your network marketing business. Which handful for me. I did excel on networking business and get to discover my strengths and build a decent leaders and large network all across the Philippines and outside the country. However not until my company slow down and soon fop down on the floor. Well it's almost a hairline to get my target.

After what happened I didn't stop looking for ways to get where I wanted to be. I study a lot, read lot's of book to learn new skills and knowledge. I bought some books, downloaded pdf file from the net and increase my financial awareness.

I'll name the books and author of the books I rode and it's subjects plus some of the link. These is highly recommendable for you guys!

Financial Education
1. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki  http://ghafari.biz/e-book/rich_dad._poor_dad.pdf
2. Cash Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki http://www.richdad.com/Home.aspx
3. Secrets of Truly Rich by Bo Sanchez

Leadership, Personal Growth and Success Mind Setting
4. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (suggest by my uncle and Robert Kiyosaki)
5. Thinking for a Change by John Maxwell
6. Talent is Never Enough by John Maxwell
7. 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell
8. Leadership Gold by John Maxwell

Spiritual Growth
9. Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
10. Bible

Actually there's lot more but these are the most influential books I rode in my 24 years of my life. Planning to learn and acquire more skills and knowledge for me to continue growing in the process..

What I do right now is continue investing on the (2) business I started and invest on the stock market by the help of an online broker. I'ts very worth while doing things out of my comfort zone. As we all thought of the idea of job security. But seems my thoughts are taking me to another path. And I do have a very good feeling about it. I just love the decisions I made few years ago. I just need to keep moving to run things out.

It's a hard work really but enjoyable. At the end of the day you always have to choose what makes you happy, It's not just about earning and money. More often it is from the satisfaction that we get from what we're doing that counts. It's just not enough for money to become our motivating ingredient to keep us moving. You should see the burning desire and calling to a particular things you are called to accomplish. Regardless of what others may want to say. Just pursue and do your best for others not to steal that dream.
